Our neighborhood pool opened this past week–that must mean it\’s summer!
I made this super simple cover-up/casual dress/swanning about outfit using this tutorial by a pair & a spare. She looked so glam in hers–possibly because she was in Greece? I, on the other hand, am in my glamorous backyard getting mosquito bites because it was Memorial Day and Memorial Day means grilling outside, dang it!
Although I found the tutorial to be a little bit confusing (it doesn\’t say how big around the dress should be, for example, which is fine, but it also doesn\’t say, like \”eyeball it to figure out how big around you want your dress to be\” so possibly missing some steps?), once you get what\’s going on, actually making the dress is the easiest thing ever–just two elasticized rectangles sewn together at center front and back.
I finished the whole thing with french seams: that\’s two french seams! I am so dedicated to my craft!! I also turned my seams under–I think her tutorial just has you leave a bunch of raw edges?
I feel pretty glamorous in this (admittedly sort of impractical) dress, like I\’m headed to the 60s French Riviera in my time machine. Probably I\’ll just wear it down the street to the pool and back, but maybe I\’ll be inspired to pack some cocktails and glam it up a bit amongst the sunburnt old ladies and the yelling kids with squirt guns.

This is such a cute dress – I can totally see it being worn in the Riviera in the 60s! I might have to give that tutorial a try.

very cute make! I think it would look nice in a tribal print or an ikat print in coral or blue? Nothing wrong with pirates though:)

That's what I thought too! It honestly takes no time at all and it would be great to embellish with crazy rick rack or pom poms or something, too.

I thought ikat too!

i read that tutorial too and noticed the step missing and gave up reading. sometimes i read those tutorials and just think, oh thats so pretty, but the glue/hand stitching is only gonna hold for 2 or 3 wears. god im sewing snob! i have a few patterns now for beach cover ups and a holiday booked for January! i should totally make one of these up anyway!!

I was trying to explain the difference between \”sewing bloggers\” and \”bloggers who sew\” the other day and I think your point is so true! So many cute, but totally-going-to-fall-apart clothes. I'll back up your sewing snobbery any day 🙂 Where are you going on holiday? Somewhere beachy?

I love this! I need it for my summer holiday too!

yes! just up the coast to a place called Port Stephens! google some photos its beautiful and only about 3 hours away. im totally wishing i could go now, but it will still be cold up there till about September. Yes! Bloggers who sew vs sewing bloggers! i always see them whip up these adorable dresses and think they used a pattern but it turns out they just traced another dress, but then they make them look so good with their styling prowess. the more who sew, the better i say!
