Hello there! I hope you didn\’t think the bows question was \”should I put bows all over this dress?\” The answer to that question is invariably yes, in my opinion.
Rather, the question is where to put the bows.
Option one is my usual go-to bow placement a la Emery etc etc (see here, here), at center front waist:
Option two is on the shoulders:
I should mention that the reason I\’m having bow placement difficulty is because I was originally intending to make this a faux-sarong tiki-style skirt (so naturally the bow would go at the waist, off to the side with the gathers) but I don\’t have a pattern for it and I can NOT for the life of me figure out how to drape it (I should mention I have no draping skills whatsoever). So my second question is: full or slim skirt? I almost always pick full. I do think that this fabric would be better suited to a wiggle skirt but I feel eh about wiggle skirts in general. Should I splash out and get a tulip skirt pattern to graft onto this thing? Help!
UPDATE: I have purchased a tiki-style wrap skirt pattern (thank you, Sarah!) and also I have figured out how to drape this skirt so it looks sort of tiki-ish as well! Thank you all for all your words of encouragement, you\’ve bullied me into being a better sewer.
Well since you asked…I think the bow on the shoulder looks fresh and interesting. How will you style your hair? Will your hair just get tangled up in the bow? Love the print by the way.
I'm really feeling the shoulder bow as well, I think it's a little more interesting and fresh- then you could always wear a really pretty statement necklace and the bow wouldn't compete with it in the front. Love your fabric choice too- perfect summer dress!
I like the shoulder bow as well. Have you tried googling how to draft a sarong drapey skirt? I'm sure I've seen diagrams on it…..

i like the bow to the shoulder too. i love those tike dresses, and i know what you mean about getting a tracing, as personally I am always curious about the original pattern. the nearest i have is a hollywood 1730 1940s wrap if that was any good drafting your own could be effective – I like this site, and if you scroll down there is a picture of a similar drape and pattern instruction – http://moldesdicasmoda.com/detalhes-de-modelacao-29/. I say go for the shoulders! Shoulder details always look great. The weight of the fabric seems to suggest that a pencil skirt situation would also work better than a fuller skirt, but if you wore it with a crinoline, I think you could get away with a full skirt too. I'm biased towards pencil skirts, but they do seem more \”tiki\” and have a cocktail than an A line/circle.
I like the bows on the shoulders too. I just sent you an email with a link to a pattern on ebay that might be what you are after, it has a sarong skirt!
Yep, shoulder bows. It gets lost in the print at the waistline.
