I intend to fill February with romance and lots of pink to stave off that winter gloom. To start us off? A hot pink coat.

This is Simplicity 1197, size 8, with no alterations for fit. I have, however, made some style changes, leaving off the collar and changing the buttons for snaps. If I\’m perfectly honest, I opted for fabric-covered snaps (which I had never done before!) partly because I liked the clean lines of Kate Middleton\’s A-line coats with snap closures (seen here in my Kate inspiration post) and partly because if I was going to do buttonholes, I was going to do bound buttonholes, and I\’ve never done those before.
(You\’ll also notice I skipped the welt pockets. This is my first coat, so, one new skill at a time, okay?)
ETA: The fabric is an Oscar de la Renta wool twill from Mood Fabrics online!
The coat is interfaced with a mid-weight fusible tricot. I checked the supply list from the Grainline Cascade coat and went from there since the Simplicity pattern only interfaces the facings, and I wanted a bit more structure.
It is fully lined with lavender silky poly–and do you see that bit of leopard print?? I did all this sewing during Jungle January, after all!
I debated a big bow like the one on this coat from Kate Spade (which I\’ve had pinned to my inspiration board for years), but ultimately went for a more delicate one after thinking about where I want my wardrobe to be headed. I\’m really trying hard to aim for a feminine, classic, retro-modern look while steering away from any of my more costumey inclinations. So: understated bow. As understated as a hot pink bow on a hot pink coat with a lavender lining can possibly be. #barbiegoals
Would you wear a hot pink coat, or do you like to stick to neutrals when it comes to basics like outerwear? I want to make a couple more coats this year, now that I know I can do it! Maybe I\’ll get around to something camel eventually…

Beautiful photoshoot and a gorgeous coat. I love brightly coloured coats, black just seems so boring! But I then find that I need several coats in several colours so colours don't clash.
What a success for a 1st coat! Your coat is gorgeous and the photos are too. Looking very Jackie O and Kate Middleton with the nude pumps, too. Love it. Personally, I like the gritty in-process photos in addition to the stylized ones. Both serve a purpose.

Lovely coat Allie – very smart. What fabric did you use, you described the lining, but not sure what the hot pink is? As for preferred style of photos, I think your posed pics are gorgeous (well done photographer), but it'd be good to have them interspersed with 'in progress' construction piccies for an insight into the sewing technique.

Omg, so cute! I don't think I could ever be brave enough to wear a bright pink coat, but I live in Southern California, so… not doing much coat wearing here anyways. You are totally pulling it off though! I am liking these stylized photo shoots that you've been doing, but I also like to see close up detail shots too 🙂
The pink looks so fun and cute on you! Unfortunately that color makes me look sallow and sickly. I would probably go for gray or olive or black, but I have so much black! Great job!

This is adorable! It really, really suits you- the shape, the style, the color! It's perfect! Personally I love a striking coat… things are so blah in cold weather that you should really jazz them up with color! I made a fuchsia coat a while back and I get more compliments on that than on any other handmade garment in my wardrobe. I think people like seeing something other than black in the winter!

Fantastic coat! I love the simple, clean lines that really let the fabric do tge talking. All winter coats should be a statement colour, leave the neutrals for indoor clothes. The added bonus of a bright coat is that it helps you to be seen on dark mornings/nights….

Oh my goodness, the coat is fantastic, and all the better for your amendments to the pattern. I have been eyeing up this coat pattern, but I was put off by the collar, and wondered if I could leave it out. Clearly it can be done, with great effect! Are there any issues or problems with leaving the collar off, or is it relatively straightforward ( I am a newbie and while I have made some dresses I have never tackled a coat). Any tips would be very gratefully received! Many thanks.
It is VERY easy to leave the collar off! This was my first coat too, so I say go for it!
